WHAM Job Search Ministry Announces “Job Loss Survival Guide” Workshops

The Department of Labor recently reported that the unemployment rate in the United States is on an overall downturn. However, in this same report, it was stated that the rates for the major worker groups, which includes adult women, Whites, and Hispanics, remained unchanged.

As the face of job seekers changes, i.e. the newly poor, late in life career transitioners, and individuals who have worked at one company only to be laid off or downsized, this workshop will provide these individuals with the proper coping tools and strategies to deal with not only the job loss but how the job loss can impact their emotions, family needs, dreams, and plans and how to take care of their physical and emotional well-being.

These two workshops will be held on Wed, Feb 22 & Wed, Feb 29 from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM.

It’s a WHAM Christmas for Hundreds of Houston Children

Volunteers spent the week before Christmas distributing toys as part of the West Houston Assistance Ministries, Inc. (WHAM) 2011 Toy Drive.  This year, 845 children registered to receive toys, a record number for the organization. Last year, only 739 children signed up for the annual event.

“Financial pressures have made the holidays especially difficult for many of the families we serve,” said Sonya Scott, Director of Client Services at WHAM. “We have been fortunate that the community has stepped up to make Christmas merrier for so many children”

Toys were collected and donated by churches, individuals and civic groups as part of the 2011 WHAM Toy Drive.  Each child received  two large gifts, one smaller item and a book. Those ages 10 and over were given $25 gift cards.

“It has been great to see the joy on the faces of so many families as they select toys to give their children this Christmas,” said Scott.

Donations were distributed at Christ the Servant Lutheran Church this week. Children were registered based on proof of need as well as whether they lived in WHAM’s service area.

The annual toy drive is only one holiday tradition for WHAM. The Adopt-A-Family program also helps bring Christmas to several families who receive services through the organization. This year 30 families received toys, food and gifts in the WHAM Adopt-A-Family program.

Teen Celebrates Birthday with Donation to WHAM Food Pantry

West Houston Assistance Ministries, Inc. (WHAM) received an early Christmas gift thanks to one generous Houston teenager. Nathan Brunell recently celebrated his 16th birthday by hosting a food drive for the organization.

In lieu of gifts, the young member of Ashford United Methodist Church asked friends and fellow churchgoers to bring canned goods and other food items to his birthday party.
The result was 60 pounds of much needed food for WHAM’s food pantry.

“It made me feel happy,” said Nathan, as he toured WHAM offices on Monday.  “I learned that giving is better than receiving.”

Nathan is dyslexic and home schooled. His father says they have always strived to teach Nathan the value of giving back to the community.  He says Ashford United Methodist Church and WHAM has given the 16-year-old a new sense of purpose and accomplishment.

“We wanted to use this as a time for him to grow,” said Lee Brunell, Nathan’s dad. “And so we suggested this to him and he said ʻYeah, Iʼd really like to do that,’ so we are really proud of him.”

Ashford United Methodist Church is one of WHAM’s founding churches. The congregation has helped throughout the years by providing WHAM with food, clothing and other essential items for families needing assistance. Two of the church’s members also serve on
WHAM’s Board of Directors.

“There are two parts to this,” said Carol Greenslate, spokesperson for Ashford United Methodist Church. “First, it allows the older members of our congregation to see that there is hope for the future. Secondly, it taps into the competitive nature of teenagers. I have already been approached by two other teens who also want to host a food drive for their birthdays.”

During the holiday season, WHAM’s food pantry continues to need mashed potatoes, stuffing mix, gravy, chicken broth, canned vegetables, fruit and yams. Grocery store gift cards in the amount of $10 are also needed to assist with the purchases of ham or turkey.
